modload problems

I can't seem to get modload to load libafs.o. It always reports
"ld: not found." . I did a bare NetBSD 1.2.1 install on a 386, with only
the base and etc packages, so maybe that's why ld isn't there?
I'm using the kernel from kcadp121.fs, and running rc.local.afs from
rc.local.
