I'm not sure if this is of as much interest to us now.  There are a
number of commercial OpenGL providers for Linux (and maybe NetBSD???)
A project has also been started to integrate Mesa support into
XFree86.  This might be a better thing for people interested to sink
energy into because it will be free.  I think someone has a good part
of GLX already working.  If people want more info, there's a mailing
list for it that's not yet under XFree86 control.  The next thing
people are playing with is adding 3d acceleration.
