I added root there (if you see my diagnosis previously posted here)
because there was *no* root entry *anywhere*.
Not in /etc/passwd.
Not in /etc/passwd.local.
Not in /etc/master.passwd.
We had to break into the machine via AFS to add a root entry so that
(1) inetd would spawn things again (2) someone with NetBSD-athena
knowledge, as opposed to general unix knowledge, could fix the
problem.
And as jhawk mentioned, it seems that this was happenning before Eric
did anything anyway...
