This may sound like sour grapes but what is the point of this thread?
AFAIK, none of the Java "owners" have asked for anyones opinion on op
overloading, nor have they given any indication that they will take
action on any resolutions arrived at by this mailing list.

Many of us have danced around the issue of "standardizing" Java: will
it become a standard? if so then what sort of organization will
attend it? etc... I am guilty of gum-flapping myself (my first post
to this group about a week ago made a plea for metaclass support in
the language). What I probably should have done was read the group
for a little while before wasting my time with such a post (it
recieved no replies).

I believe that many of us see huge possibilities for Java to become
much more than a toy. I think that we are frustrated that the people
in "control" of the language either fail to share that view, or do not
have the resources to make it happen fast enough to suit us. I hope
that Netscape Communications Corp. takes a little chunk of that IPO
money and sets the standard for executable content. They could use
the current Java spec as a starting point an do something truly
significant.
