I agree with Andrew Carlson's idea,

    That there should be a facility to switch Asserts in and out.  It's 
also useful to have conditional compilation.

    The problem with C and then C++ is the freedom they allow to invent 
short-term tricks at the expense of long-term clarity and integration.  
The preprocessor is the equivalent of GOTO; it makes for spaghetti.

    If there could be well defined pragmas, like wot Algol 68 had, I see 
only benefits.
