I'm developing a web application for a niche market in which
part of the application logic must be customizable by a
consultant or end-user. In the past, I've used Tcl for
customization, but would prefer to use Java for this
application.
So why not just use Java?
Two reasons:
First, and most important in the short term, is that I do most
of my web development on my Linux laptop. Not having Java on
my laptop means I spend a lot less time developing with Java :-(.
Right now I have a reasonable amount of C and Tcl code which I
want to replace with Java code, but at the moment I can't
justify the time-cost of using resources I have less access to.
Second, and more important in the long run, is that the Linux
culture supports the kind of developers and consultants I
would like to attract when I need to look for help in
deploying the application. If I have to choose between
developing for Linux and developing for Java, I'd choose Linux
but I'd prefer not to have to make this choice. This reminds
me of a decision I had to make a few years back to use X
instead of NeWS. Hopefully this isn't "deja-vu all over
again..."
I've seen brief mention of a Linux Java development effort in
a few places, and would like to know who, if anyone I can
contact about it. Is this effort real? Is anyone else out
there longing to develop any cool Java stuff on Linux? Anyone
willing to sell a support contract?
