Subject: The Mailing Lists at JavaSoft
The Mailing Lists at JavaSoft
=============================
Several Java related mailing lists are maintained by JavaSoft. However
some of these lists have outgrown their purposes and/or have become
too unwieldy to maintain, causing us to re-evaluate what to do with
them. After careful deliberation, this is what we have decided:
java-interest / java-interest-digest
This was created, prior to the formation of the comp.lang.java
newsgroup, as a forum for discussion of Java-related issues.
Articles posted to this mailing list have been gated to the
newsgroup, but not the other way around. We feel that questions
are better addressed on the newsgroup, and consequently have
decided to discontinue the mailing list. We have stopped gating
the postings to comp.lang.java, effective immediately. The list
will be deactivated 15 April '96.
We are not trying to distance ourselves from the developer community.
On the contrary, we try to monitor the newsgroups and get feedback
from there as much as possible. There are several resources from
which to get Java news or answers to questions from the Net/Web:
comp.lang.java The ubiquitous newsgroup

Web-based weekly summary of c.l.j
http://www.entmp.org/cgi-bin/lwgate/STRONG-JAVA/
Forum for full-blown serious
application development
http://www.dejanews.com Web-based news of all usenet groups...
http://www.altavista.digital.com ...that can be searched
java@java.sun.com JavaSoft's developer support line.
java-porting / java-porting-digest
We'll (1) stop gating the postings to comp.lang.java, and (2)
moderate this for a few days; depending on the interest levels
we may look for someone involved in porting work to maintain
and moderate the list. (If you're interested, please send mail
to 'webmaster@java.sun.com'.)
java-announce / java-announce-digest
We'll continue using this list to make announcements of new
products and releases. This is a moderated, low volume mailing list.
hotjava-interest / hotjava-interest-digest
We're still discussing this, and we'll notify the list members
when we reach a decision.
Thanks -- the JavaSoft Web Team
