In part as an update, in part to test whether any mail is flowing
through our new java.sun.com:
A request for discussion (RFD) for comp.lang.java was proposed June 7
or so, and in subsequent discussion (in news.groups) it appears to have
held up as a good idea. Because a comp.lang group really has a charter
limited to the language, and not, say, to discussions of applications
like HotJava, there has also been discussion of charters for other groups
down in the comp.infosystems hierarchy specifically covering things like
HotJava, applet authoring, etc. It looks like comp.lang.java will get a
call for votes pretty soon now. I don't think that there's a precise
enough definition of the other groups for a CFV yet. When a CFV does
come, I'll be sure to post it to the Java/HotJava mailing lists. We
will have about a month to vote.
If you're interested in this process or in reading discussion to date
on these groups, read (or wade through) news.groups. I'd sent an earlier
message just after the RFD that described the newsgroup creation process
a little more. That should be available under http://java.sun.com/archives/
somewhere -- sort the archive by author and look for my name.
