Introduction to Writing Java Applets
PLEASE NOTE: This course is a hands-on lab. Space is limited to 12
students per session. Please register early!
Target Audience: This one day lab class is designed to meet the needs
of C and C++ programmers, Web masters, and software managers who are
new to Java, and writing Java applets. No exposure to HTML or CGI is
assumed. Areas of focus include: language basics, installation, when
and how to use Java, inclusion in Web pages, and debugging. Labs are
done in the Sun/Solaris environment.
Topics discussed include:
* When to use Java. For some uses, other tools might be more
appropriate.
* Finding, downloading, viewing, and using Java and using Java
resources.
* Attaching Java applets to your Web page. A minimal amount of HTML
(the markup language underlying most Web pages) will be taught.
* Basics of the Java language (as a stand alone language). Java is
very much like C or C++, but there are some very important
differences.
* Installation of the Java Development Kit (JDK) including the JAVAC
(Java Compiler).
* Structure and development of Java applets. Several simple applets,
representing most aspects of Java, will be modified and run.
* Debugging Java (using JDB). Students will get hands on experience
with the abilities and limits of JDB.
