Java is a general purpose programming language. As long as you have a Jav=
a=20
VM on your machine, you can run a Java application - whether it is embedd=
ed=20
in a web page or not, locally or across a network. It doesn't matter.=20
JavaScript, OTOH, is a macro/scripting language used within Netscape=20
Navigator. Other browsers may, potetially, support JavaScript at a future=

date, but at present, they don't. Funtionally, it's in the same class as=20
Excel macros, Wordbasic, or other such high-end macro languages.
