I am deeply embarassed: I emphasized that my init() method was synchronized
(in order to be sure that only one applet sees that it is the first one to run).
It was NOT.
So the trick of using a class variable does work under Netscape (but not
getAppletContext().getApplets() ).
I'd better get some sleep now.
