What's the deal with Java chips? What are the intended uses?
Are they for "Java accelarators" or full blown Java systems? And are
they an entirely new design, or just a lightweight RISC state machine
with a Java software (or firmware, or something) front end in front
to get Java translation happening without having to use a stack based
chip design?

:) I would say "All of the Above!" Considering that Java is already compiled into
byte-length opcodes, creating a chip which would execute this code processor-style is
not a gigantic leap of the imagination.
