<soapbox on>

i forgot to mention in my last message (about my applet that runs on
windows that doesn't run on sun) that my other applet "scramble" -- a
generic word scramble applet --, accessible from the same page, doesn't
work on sun either. anyone with a pc and a sun should be able to see the
difference. since i don't have both, i can't fix it. this kind of bugs
me. in order to do a good job of applet development, it seems like you
have to own one of every platform out there! it also seems like the
reason for this is AWT (please, i'm not aiming to offend anyone on the AWT
team -- they have done as good a job as anyone has making a
"cross-platform" windowing toolkit...). i would really like to see an
alternative to AWT that uses lower-level primitives (ie., graphics and
hardware commands instead of native widgets) and has it's own UI
independent of the OS it runs on. i see big advantages in this. among
them, i wouldn't have to own N machines to develop java applets /
applications. java should redefine the desktop, not be crippled by it!!

anyone with me?
