The REAL DEAL, in my mind, is the new work being done to integrate
CORBA and Java. This will allow truly distributed "objects,"
rather than just distributed applets; the difference being that
in the former case, "data", not just "code", is distributed.

The nightmare is that Microsoft will use its muscle to "force"
OLE (rather than SOM/CORBA) into Java, ruining its potential by, at the
very least, fragmenting the market with incompatible implementations.

--> Please refer to the EXCELLENT comparison of OLE(COM) vs. CORBA(SOM) at:

"ftp://ftp.cil.org//pub/cilabs/tech/system_object_model/SOM_vs_COM_Compar/SO
M_vs_COM_Compar.html".

P.S., I am not an anti-Microsoft zealot. I have been programming
Windows/OLE since their beginnings.
