I've been fiddling with Java (alpha, beta, beta2) for a few weeks and still
haven't gotten anything to work reliably. I've listed some of the symptoms
in this posting. Apologies in advance if any of these items are covered in
a FAQ. I'm so bogged down with errors and misfires that I can't yet see
the forrest for the trees.
1. Out of memory when attempting to compile.
2. Can't find a particular class unless I move the class to a specific
directory; setting CLASSPATH in autoexec.bat works sometimes, but not always.
3. When visiting an example1.html, the status line says Document:Done but
I don't see a document in the viewer. The only way to cure this is to try
minimizing and then maximizing the NetScape window a random number of times.
4. Can't download a Web page with an applet in it. If I invoke the http
protocol to view a page on a remote host, and the page has an applet, then
the browser (Netscape or HotJava) performs an illegal action and is shut
down by Windows. This amplifies my problems because I don't seem to be
able to view the documentation at the java web site.
I'm using Windows 95 on my PC with 8Meg.
I'm using TIA (The Internet Adaptor) on my host shell account.
Any help with any of these symptoms would be appreciated, even if it
means follow-up questions and perhaps real voice phone calls.
Thanks.
