Small, but subtle correction. The corner stone factor in a 'winning
technology' is social acceptance. "Usefulness" is only one criteria
in the complex equation of social acceptance. There are many other
facets of creating a technology that is accepted by society, i.e.
affordability, ease-of-use, fun, stimulating.... the list goes on
and on. "Usefulness" while very important, is not the lead factor
in social acceptance. Pleasing to the senses; mind, eyes, ears,
etc. play a very dominate role in humans and technology involving
humans.
Flicker, for instance :-) The techology with the less flicker in
animation will do better than competing technologies that flicker
flicker flicker......
Humans are not so 'machine like' in nature where 'usefulness dominates
the pleasure principal'. Only a Vulcan honors 'usefulness' above
emotional satisfaction, and the majority of WWW users on this
planet are *not* Vulcans.
High Regards,
Tim
