There is a national "Java User Group" -- the Java-SIG of the Sun User
Group. Currently membership in Java-SIG is free with membership in
the Sun User Group, but it looks like Java-SIG is going to be large
enough to be spun off on its own in a couple of months. And, after
all, even though the Java technology is originally Sun's, the whole
*point* of Java is to be vendor-neutral, right?

There's a list of local chapters on that site.
Anyway, to answer your question, there are a couple local Java groups
around the country. The SFO one is run by Dimension X -- although I
don't know if they actually have face-to-face meetings. Here's the
scoop:
San Francisco, California - Java User's Group
To subscribe to the mailing list, send the words
"subscribe jug your@email.address" in the BODY of a message to
majordomo@dimensionx.com.
