I believe they're based on the alpha release (ie. the one by Tim Ritchie).
Not sure about the one by John December though (I think it only presents Java in its briefest form).
Spring will see the release of a whole host of new books.
cheers

Someone recently told me that some Java books are now in print, is this
correct and is anyone maintaining a list of books in print/due to be
published and their contents. Do they refer to the alpha or beta
specification?
Cheers.
