file paths in applications

What is the best way of getting the path to the class of a standalone java
application. I have a standalone app and I'm using images for buttons and
UI elements. Right now, I'm using the full path (ie.
file://C:/java/work/button.gif), but I'd like to be able to load files from
the same directory as the classes, or be able to construct relative file://
URLs or path strings. Any ideas?
