After stumbling around how to make the appletviewer work correctly
for a couple of days, I realized that I was making a fabulously
stupid mistake. In case any other folks having trouble with w95 are
tripping over the same silly thing, I'm going to confess my idiocy
here.

The default for the appletviewer is full screen. On Win95, this makes
the "Accept" button hide behind the taskbar. On my monitor, at least,
you get the impression that you are looking at the complete window,
because of the line at the bottom of the scrollable text box, but
you're not. You get the impression that the program is hung up
waiting for something to initialize (which, in a way, it is) and it
won't exit using the kill button in the upper right hand corner
(which, by the way, I think it should).

Anyway, I shoulda known better! When it finally dawned on me to
shrink the window, the universe opened wide.

I'm keeping notes on my "progress" through the language in a "Java
Diary" at the LAN Magazine website (http://www.lanmag.com) for anyone
who's interested. It won't be a tutorial, but it will explain the
various pitfalls I encounter along the way and will point to
resources that I find particularly helpful.
