 I'm pleased to announce that the second version of
Black Star's public Java compiler is now available at

<URL:http://mars.blackstar.com/>

This form takes advantage of Netscape 2.0's file upload
capabilities to receive the file to be compiled. This should make it
marginally easier to use. Next week I'll also
be releasing a white paper on how to handle the new MIME encoded
forms in Netscape 2.0.

The form on this page interfaces with Sun's javac compiler to produce Java
byte code for downloading. This will be useful to anyone who's on a
platform with a java enabled web browser but without a native Java
compiler. (i.e. SunOS, IRIX, HPUX). Of course it also works on the
Mac, Windows 3.1, and so on. However the compiled Java code won't be
of much use without the Java enabled web browser.

The main difference between this and a traditional compiler is that
although you can compile any Java code, you'll only be able to run
Netscape compatible applets. (I am exploring means by which you
could run applications.)

There is also currently a limitation of one file per project imposed
by the forms interface. I hope to remove that limitation next week.
