Event gobbling?

Hi fellow Java coders,
Can anyone tell me how to access all the events?
It seems that certain event types will get "gobbled"
by a component. For example, if you have a
TextArea component in a Frame, it will gobble all
the Key events. I tried extending TextArea and
using and overriding handleEvent() but that did
no good.
I must not understand the event passing methodology.
All help is appreciated.
