Come, now! Let's not be so negative! :) So what if BASIC was never very 
cohesive across various platforms and versions....just make another 
flavor that was Java-friendly. As long as the ANSI-standard BASIC is a 
part of the command set, most BASIC programs should work. I must agree 
with your sentiments about Pascal and C-type compilers, though, since 
Pascal makes heavy use of assembler-based functions and Java is so close 
to C that most things can be done without a second compiler.
