John:

You are the first one we heard about the complaint of a slow server.
Could you be more specific of which search option you were using or
you mean in general all the search options of this archive system ?
The performance problem you observed is due to slow network access to
our server or due to a slow server response ?

The current server is a SUN10 with a Oracle server runing on it to
manage the archive database. Note every page you got is generated
on-the-fly by processing a SQL-based query to the oracle engine.
Because the archiving is also on-line and real-time (new coming mails
are updated in the archive in every 30 minutes), it may slow down
a littile when the background is inserting new mails into the db and
you are accessing the DB via the front-end web interface. When you
do a keyword/subject search, you should always select a particular
newsgroup/mailing list, not the whole archive.

Our initial schedule for this archive system was focusing on
funcationality and capability. This task is almost completed and we are starting
to look into performance issue from both hardware and software. From
software, we started to refine some kernel programs to be more efficient, while
from the hardware, we will add more RAM space to this server.
Currently it has 32MB and we plan to upgrade it to be 128MB in this week.

Please let us know if you have any further question and notice further performance
problems after its memory upgrade this week. Thanks.
