Dear Java Developers and HotJava Users,
EarthWeb is pleased to announce the opening of Gamelan, a directory and
registry of Java(tm) applets and other resources. This site is a free
service for the Java development community and has been endorsed by Sun's
Java group (see press release below). You are invited to visit and
register your applets so that other developers can locate them more
easily. We also want your feedback on the layout and organization of the
site. This is still a very preliminary version. Next week, all the
language will be revised to conform to Sun's guidelines, and we will be
adding and revising descriptions to many entries. Any and all comments
will be more than welcome.
Gamelan's URL is:
http://www.gamelan.com/
As well as applets, you can register the location and descriptions of
applications, documents, sites (including your own home pages), and
people. In coming weeks, we will be adding our own reviews and
comments to applets which are submitted, as well as linking to other
directories. In developing Gamelan, we have been coordinating with
Sun and other members of the development community in order to make
this truly useful. We also hope to work together with the other
Java(tm) directories springing up on the web.
Eventually, we will want to add individual classes to the database as
well, possibly incorporating Sun's autodoc technology. This would appear
as a separate hierarchy. But for the moment, we're concentrating on sites
and applets.
Presently, the database is rather sparse; hopefully you all will help fill
it. We really look forward to seeing what applets you've been writing.

Java in Indonesia, composed mostly of gongs and metallophones.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
EARTHWEB AND SUN UNVEIL GAMELAN SERVICE ON
THE INTERNET
Premier Directory for the Java(tm) Revolution
Goes On-Line!
NEW YORK, NY (October 6, 1995) EarthWeb, a leading developer
of landmark Web sites, today announced the debut of
Gamelan(tm), the most sophisticated directory and registry of
Java(tm) programs and resources on the Internet. Developed by
EarthWeb as a central idea exchange, Gamelan provides
pointers to the wave of next-generation Java(tm) applications
that is revolutionizing the Internet. Gamelan can be accessed
on the Web at http://www.gamelan.com/ using a browser such as
Mosaic or Netscape. Gamelan was developed in coordination
with Sun Microsystems, which has endorsed the service as a
premier site for the Java(tm) community.
"Gamelan is a great way for users of the Internet to access
the latest innovations in Java(tm) programming. Thousands of
developers are now using Java to create ground-breaking
applications for Web-based publishing, entertainment,
education and electronic commerce. We're excited about the
exploding user community for Java, and companies like
EarthWeb are helping to lead the way by providing valuable
Java(tm)-based expertise and services for the Internet," says
Kim Polese, Java/HotJava Marketing Manager, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
"The Java(tm) programming language radically advances the
multimedia potential of the Net, enabling faster animation,
games, and powerful interactivity within Web sites," says
Nova Spivack, Senior VP, Strategy & Development, EarthWeb.
"EarthWeb's Gamelan site reveals state-of-the-art Java(tm)
programs to the public. Sun's Java(tm) technology is a stroke
of genius that will transform the Internet in a matter of
months," Spivack adds.
"The Java(tm) language is a revolutionary technology with
profound implications for the Internet as well as the computer
industry in general." Says Jack D. Hidary, CEO of EarthWeb.
"Java(tm) is especially powerful because developers can write
a program once and it automatically works on all platforms.
This will rapidly reduce development time and change the
structure of the software industry," Hidary adds.
Although Java(tm) programs require a Java(tm)-enabled browser
(such as Sun's HotJava(tm) Web browser, or the much-
anticipated Netscape 2.0 browser), much of the information in
EarthWeb's Gamelan site can be viewed using any standard
graphical Web browser. Using EarthWeb's advanced Internet
databasing techniques, Gamelan is designed to support the
rapid proliferation of new Java(tm) applications, developers,
and sites.
EarthWeb's Gamelan site derives its distinctive name from the
orchestral Indonesian musical tradition. A gamelan is a
musical ensemble that combines dozens of unique percussion,
wind, and stringed instruments. Gamelan performances join
numerous parallel themes to form an emergent whole that is
greater than the sum of its parts. This process is similar to
the way in which Java(tm) programs may be built from many
different classes of software created by developers around
the world.
EarthWeb, LLC is a cutting-edge Internet development company
started in 1994. EarthWeb's develops Web sites and new
Internet technologies for landmark organizations such as The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, The David Letterman Top Ten List,
Fashion Internet, Dun & Bradstreet, Coopers & Lybrand, the
Smithsonian Institute, and many others. EarthWeb is now
pioneering the Java(tm) language frontier with applications
ranging from interactive Internet games to fundamental
enabling technologies.
