Persistance in Java???

I've just about finished the white paper, as well as previously having 
read the Java Language spec. and there seems to me to be one glaring 
omission.

DOES Java support persistant objects?  There's the Transient keyword 
(thats never really explained) but thats the ONLY reference to 
persistance I can find...

It woudl be a real shame if Java did all these other neat things but 
didn't solve the persistance problem for us...
