Perhaps I should be a little more specific. I'm trying to select a
language to manage an object-oriented multi-modal database for a
virtual environment application (and Java is a candidate).
The database
1) includes geometric descriptions of models that have articulated
parts (a human arm, for example)
2) includes behavior and interaction rules for objects
3) must deal with user input
4) must manage interface devices (HMD, gloves, speech recognition,
sound spatializers, etc)
5) is located on several different and geographically distant platforms.
The language chosen will serve as the "glue" that holds everything
together across our network. It must support simultaneous events and
it must deal with different platforms. In short, the language will
bring every part of the database together in one living, breathing
virtual environment.
From reading the Java White Paper, I get the impression that Java was
written for this kind of work. And I'd like to do a sanity check with
more knowlegable people than myself to make sure that I'm not getting
brainwashed. It's good that Java is a simple and familiar OOPL that
supports multi-threading, etc. But I'd like to get a balanced view...
Thanks for your advice in advance! If this list is the wrong place to
discuss this topic, you can email me directly (acheng@mit.edu)
