Hi folks,

As you may know, the mailing lists run on java.sun.com have been
growing rapidly and have gotten to the point that they are rather
unwieldy (16K total subscriptions, 10K distinct subscribers). We
are pushing out a huge amount of mail daily, and with that comes added
load on our T-1 and server, meaning slow delivery and limitations on
ftp and http service. (We will be getting a bigger line before long.)
The numbers on the lists also mean more annoying mistakes and bogus
bounces back to the lists that reduce the quality of the content.

The creation of comp.lang.java gives us the opportunity to stop
relying so heavily on the mailing lists. In the near future we are
going to start forwarding the contents of the java-announce,
java-interest and java-porting mailing lists to comp.lang.java. We
can't really forward hotjava-interest into that group because it's
outside its charter, but will forward it into alt.www.hotjava. In
doing so we will take over for Tim Newsome, who has been graciously
serving as a gateway to alt.www.hotjava so far. We will probably
get together an RFD for some HotJava-oriented group at some point.

I encourage people to start reading comp.lang.java and alt.www.hotjava
in addition to the mailing lists. When you start seeing stuff from a
list in the news groups, we *strongly* encourage you to *unsubscribe*
from the mailing list and use the news group as your primary source for
Java info. The exception in the short term may be hotjava-interest,
given that there might be people who can't see that group.

If at all possible we intend to get out of the mass mailing list
business. Suggestions and comments to me.
