I believe that I am having similar problems because I'm running on an 
X-terminal.  (actually it's eXceed for Windows)

I posted an example using GridLayout a few days ago.
It's definitely not just the refresh problem.

This is a bit scary.  If awt is exercising some obscure bugs in X servers
it might not be something that Sun could readily fix.
