interfaces?

Can someone give me a decent explanation of what an "interface" (wrt
java of course) is? I cannot grok what the docs are trying to say. Is
it basically a class-ish way of organizing abstract methods?
The docs say you can functionally achieve multiple inheritance with
interfaces. I don't follow. The only functional equivalent that I
can see to MI is basically using "has-a" hierarchies which is hardly
equivalent.
I'm not a fan of MI, but I'm a fan of clear documentation.
