The purpose of sun.* classes?

Perhaps I've missed this in the JDK documentation, but I'm not sure I
understand the purpose of  the sun.* classes. Why would one browser support
it and not another? Is this a platform dependency issue?

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated...
