appletviewer -debug error

I just downloaded the Developer's Kit and tried this
~/GNU/java/JDK/java/demo/MoleculeViewer>../../bin/appletviewer -debug example3.html
Loading jdb ...
Internal exception: java.io.IOException /dev/console
at java.io.FileOutputStream.<init>(FileOutputStream.java)
at java.tools.ttydebug.TTY.<init>(TTY.java:1038)
at java.tools.ttydebug.TTY.main(TTY.java:1239)
Can anybody explain me what the error could be. I can run the appliction
without -debug though.
../../bin/appletviewer example3.html works fine.
