Filtering in FileDialog

In my applet I use the FileDialog class to let the user select a
new file to display. In the API documentation it is said that this class
is using a native gui platforms's dialog and there seems to be no way to
customize this dialog.
Question: is it possible to influence the filtering mechanism ?
E.g. I woold like to set filter to *.mpr, how can I do that ?
