Which is why I'm surprised nobody has commented on my suggested fix
to the bizarre toString() hack. It requires no change to any code
that uses the conversion to String. Instead, it just requires the
class definition to add a "implements Stringable" clause.
Has anyone at Sun thought about this?
My post in question is archived as

The latter half of that message details my design to eliminate
the automatic call of toString during concatenation, thus removing
a gross hack to the language semantics.
