Whenever I've heard about Java for the Mac, I've always heard that it would
be available "for MacOS System 7.5" in the Fall, but when I filed a bug
report (about something else), this was include in an auto-echoed form
letter:

2. When/how can I get Java and HotJava for my system XXX?

In addition to the HotJava browser, our binary alpha release contains
a package of development software: the Java compiler, interpreter,
and class libraries. Here is the current picture of availability:

1.0 alpha3 versions available now either by anonymous ftp
(java.sun.com) or at our web site (http://java.sun.com/):
        - Sun SPARC-based machines running Solaris 2.3 or above
        - Intel x86 machines with Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51
        - Intel x86 machines with Windows 95

    In-house ports underway:
        - Macintosh PowerPC (MacOS 7.5)

    Possible third-party ports:
Our source code is available for independent ports, and many
individuals have expressed interest in porting to various
platforms (e.g., Amiga, Linux, NeXT, OS/2, and Windows 3.1).
For more information, you can search our mail archives
        (http://java.sun.com/mail.html) or check out platform-specific
        mailing lists (http://java.sun.com/Mail/external_lists.html).

We cannot provide any more specific information about ports at this
time. When a new version or port is released, we'll announce it on
our web site and on the java-announce mailing list.
[====================================================end quote:]

Here it says more than just "MacOS 7.5", it specifies System 7.5 *on the
PowerPC*. Does this mean that the upcoming Mac Java from Sun will not be
available for 68k Macs? On my web site at http://www.nativeguide.com, we're
still getting more hits from 68k Macs than from Power Macs. I was assuming
the upcoming Mac release would cover both markets. Was I misinformed? Or
worse? ;-)

[BTW, I know this should go to the porting mailing list, but I'm not signed
up for that list, we don't have a real newsgroup yet, and the archives
appear to have been abandoned weeks ago, so I'm hoping someone from Sun on
this list could answer here.]

Thanks,
__Glen__
