How about exercises?  Raw information is lovely, especially if it is
organized to suit the needs of a "student."  But exercises provide
the feedback that says either "yes, move on" or "hmmm, better
rethink that."   Incrementally learning the Java
syntax and class library could be done very efficiently and
effectively over the net through textual content followed by
(automatically "gradable") programming assignments.

(If you want to teach 100,000 programmers Java, I think that's
the way.)
