Sure to all three. Check out alpha3 Java API. The FileInputStream class gives
you that functionality.

Good luck,

Subject: Very simple questions

Hello,

I have a business idea which I suspect could be implemented perfectly by
means of HotJava or other future Java-compatible browsers such as Netscape.
But at this point I am not Java (or even http) literate.

I have a Mac, but am considering getting an NT machine so I can get started
now with Java.

To help me decide whether I should do this, please help with these questions!

1) Can a Java program read a disk file?

2) If yes, are there security features that cause such disk file access to
be restricted to certain directories, or is there complete freedem there?

3) Is there some way for a Java program which is reading a disk file to
communicate the information it finds there back to a program running on the
server? Sending it as an email message would be acceptable for my
purposes, but I'm wondering if there are other ways.

I'd be very grateful for any and all help with these questions!
