RATIONALE:
At the present time Sun Microsystems is making the JAVA Programming
Language available to a wide range of software developers and World Wide
Web users. Netscape has announced that they intend to add the JAVA
programming capabilities to their Web browser. Even though various
mailing lists exist with a lively group of postings, there is currently
no Usenet group dedicated to JAVA discussions.
Sun currently hosts two mailing lists devoted to discussion of Java
language issues: java-interest and java-porting. Here are the
subscriber counts for these lists as of August 25:
java-interest 1095
java-interest-digest 1670
java-porting 975
java-porting-digest 955
Total unique addresses in these four groups: 3589
Traffic on the java-interest mailing list averages 20-30 messages per
day. Traffic is increasing; for example, over 50 messages were posted
on August 25.
CHARTER: comp.lang.java
The proposed newsgroup is intended as a place for users of the JAVA
language to exchange ideas and to discuss the development of interactive
content. Hopefully, companies doing the various ports of JAVA will
monitor the group and will keep readers posted on the status of their
ports.
Example topics may include:
- How to develop JAVA applets.
- The exchange of JAVA applets.
- The status of JAVA ports.
- Improved JAVA compiler technology.
- Additions to the JAVA class library.
- Announcements on Web sites that support JAVA.
- JAVA programming contest announcements.
At least initially, the proposed group will be gatewayed with the
java-interest mailing list:
Posting address: java-interest@java.sun.com
Request address: java-interest-request@java.sun.com
END CHARTER.
