I'm doubt one would want to construct a secure OS in Java, but there
are interesting security enhancements to the Java VM possible.  For
example, one could imagine allowing secure interapplet communication
by using the virtual memory address translation hardware to control
object access efficiently.  The Opal Project has explored some of the
issues.
