Java marketing focus: Java is Telescript done right?

I'm very excited about Java and its potential, but it seems to be suffering
from some rather unfocused marketing. Stewart Alsop thinks it's for doing
animations. Scott McNealy says it makes application porting and
installation easier. I haven't seen a really coherent explanation anywhere
in the public press.
Contrast this with General Magic's approach to Telescript. Everybody knows
what Telescript is for, or at least they think they do. Check out this
paragraph from the Telescript white paper:
Telescript technology is based on a very simple yet extremely
powerful and all-encompassing concept. Every messages is a
Telescript program and every network is a receptacle or
Telescript interpreter for programs. The network changes
from a predefined rigid system into a flexible platform for
applications and services.
A very effective paragraph. Fills you with hope for the future, eh?
Despite the fact that there are no publicly-available, much less free,
implementations of Telescript, GM has the mind share--people are waiting
for Telescript to work.
Here's the weird thing: Java does just about everything Telescript does.
But I think everyone on this list would agree that the barriers to entry
for the Java market are much lower. Since General Magic has already done
such a great job of explaining why something like Java is what the world
needs, why not take advantage of their advance preparation?
Here's the message I think the Java group should be pushing:
JAVA IS TELESCRIPT, HERE TODAY. (Well, sooner than Telescript.)
UNLIKE TELESCRIPT, JAVA IS OPEN AND FREE.
UNLIKE TELESCRIPT, JAVA LEVERAGES THE INTERNET. TODAY.
