This message to announce that OSF has engaged into a Java project.
The goal of this project is to carry out an assessment of the
Java/HotJava technology, as developed by Sun.
There are three components to this assessment:
- Port of the software to other platforms than those already
ported by Sun, and evaluation of portability/quality.
- Technology assessment: performance, completeness,
investigation of security issues and adequacy of the technology
to be used as mobile code.
- Development of a test suite for measuring software quality,
performance and checking security.
The project is sponsored by ATT, Digital, Hewlett-Packard,
Novell and Sun. The platforms currently targeted for the ports are:
- Intel 486, running the Unixware operating system from Novell.
- Multi-Pentium, the multiprocessor configuration from ATT,
running the ATT Unix operating system.
- Digital Alpha running the Digital UNIX operating system.
- HP PA running the HP-UX operating system.
We are trying to do a single source port for all platforms
and of course verify that the port does not break on Solaris :-)
The early results of the project will be communicated to the sponsors
first of course. In general, OSF intends to release on Internet all
binaries and sources that are not subject to Sun licensing terms.
Progress reports for this project will be displayed at
