Thanks for the thoughts, but in my mind solving the following:

would be the whole point of some scheme that was either (a) provided by
the language directly, or (b) provided by a (possibly language-assisted)
library package of classes.

I was hoping for (a) or (b) above, since the compiler (and its obvious
derivatives) already exist.

I suspect that leaving this out was a design *choice* (simplicity, style,
a desire for more static semantics, etc.) and was hoping to get a Javaite
at Sun to give us all a little bit of software engineering history...
