I'm trying to determine the suitability of Java for developing standalone
apps. My perception is that Java and it's environment are not yet ready
to support (serious) development of standalone GUI apps.

For instance, as far as I understand, there is no debugger available
for Java, and it seems as though support for GUI Widgets is in it's infancy.
I'm also concerned about incorporating legacy C/C++ code.

Any light shed is greatly appreciated.
