The metricom "ricochet" modems are *amazing*. kermit is giving
me 1500-2000 cps for large file transfers, from around 750ft away...
and a large encrypted rcp (over CSLIP) got closer to 2500 cps.
And they're more reliable than my phone line (which I've finally
cancelled -- it would drop the connection several times a day...)
hacking:
Beta testing "xtrkcad" -- a linux-X11 program for doing railroad
layout. Discovered that my existing N-scale track layout can't
possibly work (oops :-)
Trying to get ESS-688 sound support working in linux, for only one
reason: driving the headphone port so I can practice morse code
for my General Class upgrade (13wpm code (1B) only.)
Studying for my General class amateur license. 13wpm code is the
hard part...

Leahy savors role in Batman's shadow

You never know what lies beneath the surface of a Washington policy
wonk. Sen. Patric J. Leahy, the sober and serious Democrat from
Vermont, is something of an expert on agricultural issues, defense and
foreign affairs. But it is Batman that really makes his heart
race. Indeed, his passion for the caped crusader is so great that it
landed him a cameo in ``Batman Forever,'' starring Val Kilmer, Jim
Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones.
Leahy can be seen be-bopping on a dance floor with a former
Miss Vermont just before Batman comes crashing through the
ceiling. "My part was very easy," Leahy said. "It required no talent,
no great knowledge, nothing in the way of good looks or natural
ability. It was almost the same qualifications as being a member of
the US Senate."
The senator's fascination with Bruce Wayne, the Batmobile, the
Batcave and all things having to do with the comic book hero began at
the age of 5 in 1945. Leahy can recite the names of all the villains
Batman has ever battled, why Batman and Robin split up, and any other
trivia regarding his hero.
Leahy even has his own specially drawn Batman strip, prepared
by DC Comics. In it, Batman and the senator discuss bedtime
reading. Leahy tells him that he reads Batman late at night, and
Batman says that he curls up in the Batcave with the Congressional
Record.
"Having read both, there are days when I think I made the
better choice," Leahy writes in a foreword to the 50th anniversary
hardcover edition of "The Dark Knight" by Bob Kane, the comic book
character's creator.
