travel:
Back from California. Got lots of new toys. No more travel until 7/1.
Lots of July weddings though, plus teaching at Stanford...
Lots of bicycling as well. I may donate my car to charity in order
to stop paying the insurance on it, now that I'm convinced that
I can survive by bicycle. But there's this cool '53 olds for sale...
toys:
The metricom "ricochet" modems are *amazing*. kermit is giving
me 1500-2000 cps for large file transfers, from around 750ft away...
and a large encrypted rcp (over CSLIP) got closer to 2500 cps.
hacking:
Beta testing "xtrkcad" -- a linux-X11 program for doing railroad
layout. Discovered that my existing N-scale track layout can't
possibly work (oops :-)
Trying to get ESS-688 sound support working in linux, for only one
reason: driving the headphone port so I can practice morse code
for my General Class upgrade (13wpm code (1B) only.)
Studying for my General class amateur license. 13wpm code is the
hard part...
they've been upside down so long the blood has leaked out their ears:
CANBERRA, June 15 (Reuter) - Australia's brothels and sex shops
have launched a boycott of French sex products in protest against
President Jacques Chirac's decision to resume nuclear testing in the
South Pacific.
``French-maid outfits and French-knickers are being taken out
of window displays and requests for condoms as French letters are to
be ignored,'' said The Eros Foundation, which represents Australia's
sex industry.
In a statement titled ``Sex Industry says 'No' to French,'' the
foundation said on Thursday French-made adult videos, magazines and
sex toys would be boycotted and it would encourage an international
boycott of French sex products.
``The industry is also undertaking a major review of language
and terminology which paints the French as lovers and therefore
peaceful,'' the foundation said.
The industry would look to rename the French kiss using
Australian terms and would also avoid using the terms L'Amour and Je
t'aime to describe specific acts and products.

Recent happenings:
Commencement was... OK. My mother and my sister attended; my father
could not, due to the family business. Waiting in line in the morning
was fun, as it was a chance to talk and chat with people; whereas, the
actual receiving of the diploma happened so quickly that there was no
great thrill. Graduation was peculiar in that the majority of those
who I considered my classmates had already graduated last year. I
suppose I should get my diploma framed --- if nothing else, I'll be
much less likely to misplace them once they are framed. :)
I spent last week taking a bus tour: NYC, Atlantic City, Philadelphia,
Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. (The
tour actually included Boston, too, at the very end, but I decided to
bail out when the bus stopped in front of 77 Mass Ave. Just got off
and started walking home....) It was fun. I liked the Canada cities
I saw (very liveable, they appear). Wish I had time to stay in NYC
and Washington DC for a week apiece to go to the abundance of museums.
Exposed lots of film; unfortunately, I forgot to use up a roll of ASA
1600 when I had the opportunity to try to take pictures of Niagara
Falls at night.
I think in the future, though, I will plan on traveling by plane,
train, or car --- and not by bus. And if I take another packaged
tour, I will definitely NOT join a tour where most of the customers
about about 3-4 decades older than I am.

Random thought:
I don't miss their fur flying around the room or their "thumping" at
night... but I do miss my rabbits.

One day in a nuclear age
they may understand our rage
They build machines that they can't control
And bury the waste in a great big hole
Power was to become cheap and clean
Grimy faces were never seen
But deadly for twelve thousand years is
carbon fourteen
We work the black seam together
