When spring finally came and I experienced an unprecedented urge to play
with dirt, I decided to plant an indoor herb garden. In the spirit of
aellwood's fish tank, here are some updates. (Plants are more boring than
fish, but at least they don't eat each other.)
Week 1:
Basil: nothing
Chives: pushing vigorously out of the soil already
Parsley: nothing
Marjoram: signs of life...
Week 2:
Basil: two or three sprouts, out of at least 50 seeds planted
Chives: looking like a nice grassy lawn
Parsley: still nothing
Marjoram: one row doing fine, the other mysteriously dead. (Maybe they
died of ick.)
Week 2.5:
Basil: more and more sprouts
Chives: looking like a shaggier lawn
Parsley: look! One sprout!
Marjoram: just failing to thrive
Week 3:
Basil: a full set of sprouts, but they get to be an inch high and stop growing
Chives: threatening to take over the planter
Parsley: a few more sprouts, but only one row, like the marjoram. Weird.
Marjoram: in stasis, like the basil. I sacrificed a stray chive that ended
up among them. Maybe it'll help.
It isn't safe to be an herb...
