Subject: Post-graduation plans
[Hi, you're receiving this email because I thought you might be
interested in hearing where I'm headed after graduation.]
Some of you have heard me complain (OK, OK, whine would be more
accurate, and thanks to those of you who were supportive anyway...)
about the whole job search process, but in retrospect, I'm glad I
spent the time to look into and interview with a bunch of different
companies, even if it meant I got very tired of airports and red-eye
flights and hotels, and the process took a lot of time away from my
working on thesis.
I've decided to accept SGI's offer, because I really liked the cool
plastic Slinkies they gave out at their presentation on campus.
OK, just kidding.
There were many variables I was looking at: the kind of work I would
be doing; the people I would be working with; my immediate manager and
company management in general; what I thought of the company's
prospects; geographic location; compensation package; etc. I will
readily admit that one of my flaws is that I deliberate too much when
it comes to making personal decisions. In defense of myself, however,
I was fortunately enough to have multiple different but excellent
opportunities; it is ironic that the more difficult it is to make a
decision between different options, the less of a difference it makes
as to which option eventually gets chosen. (I think that's
paraphrasing Seymour Papert, but I'm not positive.)
I've been pretty happy in the MIT environment during the last five
years, but I do think it's time for me to move on, so I'm pretty
psyched about getting out into the real world. I am pretty sad,
though, about the prospect of leaving the many friends around here
(especially APO friends) behind... you bet we can and will stay in
touch by email, but it just won't be the same. You'll just have to
come out and visit me in Mountain View, CA, obviously. :)
