According to psychoanalytic authors, this fairy tale is a veiled
allegory of the Oedipal sequence. The wicked queen is the mother on
whom the child projects her own hate and sexual jealousy. The Oedipal
conflict is temporarily resolved as the child's erotic urges go
underground and remain dormant for the seven years of the latency
period, symbolized both by Snow White's long sleep and by the seven
dwarfs. At the end of this period, her sexuality is reawakened in
adult form by the young prince. (The meaning of the sword is left as
an exercise for the reader.)
