The postings on the problems of similar looking buttons (RISKS-16.47&48)
reminded me of a related RISK of failing to understand user perceptions.
Some years ago, an electronics/avionics/computer/etc company (best they remain
anonymous) manufactured a military C3 system for use in trucks. Part of the
equipment consisted of a small minicomputer which was installed under a
desktop in the back of the truck. The mini had a button on the front labelled
"BOOT". The squaddies operating the gear took this to mean the method of
operating the button, rather than its function. Not surprisingly, the button
and switch had a very short life. Education consistently failed to solve the
problem, and in the end the switch had to be redesigned with a large, heavy
duty, heavily sprung steel button that then could ONLY be operated by a kick.
