STATUS:

Still sick with some combination of cold and flu. It's been
2.5 weeks already! The problem is that I don't quite make it to a
healthy state before I get struck down by the next one.
Weird anomalies on some medical tests remain; we'll see if some new
tests clear that up. More on that later.
Classes still cool. Haven't had time in the last two weeks to
continue sitting in on the humanities classes I wanted to sit in on,
though (6.095 and SP440). :( I don't think it'll get any better as
the term progresses.
Have an RA, yay! I'm finding it hard to get started though. Road
block #1: Sun says it'll take 7 weeks (7 weeks!!!) to deliver a
SPARCstation 5 to put on my desk. Good grief, in 7 weeks the fall
term will be nearly over. Need to find a better solution to this,
it's a pain to try to do software system hacking when you don't have
access to computing resources from where you sit. Speaking of where
I sit, I have an office now. See below.
Spent some time doing volunteer stuff. Planing to go on APO chapter
weekend (service trip to Camp Virginia, a Girl Scout camp) this
weekend, should be good stress relief. Spent about 6 hours on
*.answers moderation stuff yesterday. Am annoyed by the traffic on
faq-maintainers: some of the criticism being leveled at the
*.answers moderators is constructive, but too much of it right now
is just whining. Sigh.
Got some job interviews coming up next week: I scheduled 3 of them for
the same day (3 interviews for the price of wearing a suit for 1
day, cool, right?) Picked up a couple of suits from Filene's
Basement; have to decide which one I like (and then return the other
one), or maybe keep both. Updated my resume -- the format now looks
more like the "standard" template, but still a little different.

A STORY
~~~~~~~
Yesterday morning, I got up at 6:00 in the morning so that I could
make it to an 7:30 medical appointment at Mt. Auburn Hospital. Public
transportation would be a pain so early in the morning, I thought, so
I planned on riding my bike there. I rode up the river earlier this
week and timed it, and it only takes 20 minutes to bike from Tang to
the hospital. So I biked there, and by 10:00 I was ready to leave.
On the way back, before I got back to even Harvard Square, I hear this
fairly loud pop, and then a steady hiss. Right, the rear tube had
blown. Well, I don't carry tire jacks and a patch kit with me, so I
walked the rest of the way back. That was a bit of a pain, because it
took so long. And then all yesterday I actually had to walk (gasp!)
to get to places. Geez, this campus is too long....
Last night, I ask one of my suitemates to drive my bike to
Broadway Bicycle School (BBS) to be repaired, and he agreed. But I
had forgotten when arranging for the ride that I had promised a friend
of mine to appear at a court hearing of his this morning. I
overslept, but when I did wake up, I remembered about the hearing,
wrote a note to my suitemate, and headed out quickly. I realized that
I wouldn't have time to walk over to the courthouse, and figured a
taxi was my best bet. But taking a taxi left me with a bit more time,
and so I spent an extra $3-5 (in taxi time) to bring my bike over to
BBS on the way to the courthouse.
So it's around 1:30pm when I had time to head to BBS. I learned
how to change tires, so I opted to replace the tube myself, using
their facilities. Time: $10 (including some teaching time [for $12
per hour they will teach you how to make repairs, tune-ups, etc.]).
Materials: new tube #1 that I ruined by accident (i.e., through my own
incompetence), $5; new tube #2, the one I did put in without ruining,
$5. I roll my bike outside, hop on, and within 20 feet I hear a loud
pop followed by... you guessed it, steady hissing.
I head back in, and this time, I have one of the shop people do
it. He examines the tire and the rim carefully to see if there is any
embedded glass or similar sharp protrusions -- nope. Labor: $5.
Materials: new tube #3, $5. So I roll on out and now I'm in hurry
because it's gotten later than I expected. I bike to Tech Square to
pick up an Add/Drop slip my advisor signed, and when I get there, I
realized that I had left my Kryptonite lock at BBS. Sigh. So I had
to hassle with hauling my bike into building NE43 and into building
E19 rather than being able to just lock it up outside. Done with the
errand, I hop back on the bike and ride to BBS. About two blocks
away, I hear....
Back at BBS, the shop personnel were sympathetic to see me return
yet again. This time, the shop manager person is the one to help me,
and she pores over my tire. Aha! she found the culprit: my tire had
developed a crack on the side, and apparently the tube was popping out
through that crack. Materials: $19 for a new tire (the old one was
definitely old and cracking in other places, unsalvageable); new tube
#4, free. Labor: free. (Free, because she thought that the person
who changed my tube for me probably should have spotted the defect in
my tires when he was doing the change.)
Sigh. It took far too long to get my bike fixed, and the total
bill was quite substantial (for a bike I paid $75 for in the first
place). I think today marks when I've spent more on the running total
for repairs than on the bike originally.

Need one more H-level grad class to finish either theory or AI
engineering concentration (depending on which I feel like counting
Machine Learning class as).
The only class being offered to permit students to finish women's
studies minor is a class I have no interest in. That sucks. :(

Wow, some vacation! Last night was an *awesome* BareNaked Ladies
concert (even if it was held in a movie theater. Trust Somerville
Theater to have a BareNaked Ladies concert wherein attendees buy
(from concessions) popcorn and bottled water) with cool people, and
now I'm about to head off to Ottawa for Canadian Thanksgiving. I'm
pretty sure that I'll be going (there are other people in line ahead
of me), but even if I don't it'll be a relaxing weekend...
So, I probably should write some more stuff here, but instead I'm
going to go get ready for the trip, or not. :-)
